Purchase guide 2018: electric cars, silent and clean

Electric cars are the future of mobility. Have already gone through our shopping guides both hybrid cars and plug-in hybrid cars, so the third logical step in this evolution, pure electric, which does not use any combustion mechanics at any time.

The price of an electric car is somewhat lower if we take into account the aid of the MOVELE Plan, aimed precisely at reducing the cost of purchasing some vehicles, so that there is less dependence on oil. In 2014 it took a long time to apply, so it is conceivable that, if approved earlier, sales would be higher. But eye. Even with the subsidy, the price of the car continues to be higher than an equivalent … at least until the batteries go down in price (experts indicate that in ten years they will cost half).

Why choose them then? Without a doubt, because they have another series of advantages. The main one is that the cost of loading is much lower than what gasoline costs. Electric vehicles spend around 2 euros per 100 km (or less, if the nightly, more advantageous rates are contracted), for the almost 10 euros that cost in one of gasoline.

According to a recent study, European families could save 60% their monthly fuel bills if they used an electric vehicle, which translates into a saving of 24 euros per month for an average European family (with at least one child living in the home). This study, developed by a group of expert anthropologists from Stripe Partners and sponsored by Nissan, was carried out with 5,568 people from six European countries (Spain among them, with 1,005 participants). He stressed that, when choosing a car for the family, people seek safety (35%), low maintenance cost (28%) and practicality (19%), far ahead of aspects such as comfort or performance.

But there is more savings, since their maintenance costs are derisory, since their engines are less complex than one of combustion, they use fewer parts and there is no need to worry about changes of liquids, oils … There are even common elements, such as pads and brake discs, which last longer thanks to regenerative braking. And beware, in a few cities do not pay parking in restricted areas, so they can mean a great saving of time and money to some people.

Despite this, they continue to have a very limited use, limited to the city and surrounding areas, due to their reduced autonomy. That limits its versatility. While scientists can not increase the capacity of the batteries or reduce the recharge time, the main proposals of the manufacturers will be vehicles focused on urban use.

The big winner of the now small electric market is the Nissan Leaf, followed by the Renault Zoe. This shows that people, for the moment, prefer vehicles designed from the start to be driven with these engines. The third in discord is the BMW i3, an interesting fact, since depending on how their sales go depends on the brand’s bet in the future for electric cars … and also that their rivals think about it.

Hence, as you see below, are the best sellers (in the chart we do not include sales of commercial vehicles with this technology).

The main novelty is the sum of the BMW i3s, a more sporty variant of the model. In this case there are more aesthetic differences, because it has 20-inch wheels, a lower suspension height and more prominent skirts. In both cases, the interior remains as it has been, with the inclusion of the latest in brand technology, such as high-resolution 10.25-inch screens.

The standard equipment of the BMW i3 is quite complete and has elements such as the LED headlights, the two screens (the main one and another for the instrumentation), climate control, multifunction steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, parking assistant, ConnectedDrive or sensors light and rain. In the list of optional elements there are also many customization options with materials for the interior and more driving aids.

As for the mechanical range there are important developments. The BMW i3 maintains the synchronous electric motor with 170 HP and an improved range up to 190-200 kilometers, according to the new WLTP calculations, thanks to the 21.6 kWh battery. The BMW i3s has the same engine and maintains the autonomy, but its power rises to 184 hp, which presents a performance 40% higher than the i3. Both versions additionally offer the Range Extender (REX) to include a small two-cylinder engine that extends its range another 130 kilometers.
